MATH 057 Math Lab No credit

A remedial class reviewing the basic concepts of mathematics covered in introductory high school courses. This class is recommended for those who in the past have found mathematics challenging and would prefer a solid review before enrolling in a college mathematics course. Recommended for those with a math ACT score of 21 or below.


MATH 156 College Algebra 3 hours

A review and study of algebraic topics including equations, inequalities, exponents and functions. Designed for students who are weak in algebraic skills. Recommended for those with an ACT math score of 22 or above. Requires the additional completion of MATH157 to fulfill the mathematical Essential Skills requirement. 


MATH 157 Plane Trigonometry 2 hours

The essentials of trigonometry with some applications. This course is for students competent in algebra but who have weak trigonometric skills or who did not complete a trigonometry class in high school. Recommended for those with an ACT math score of 24 or above. Fulfills the mathematical Essential Skills requirement.


MATH 186 Elementary Functions 3 hours

A study of fundamental mathematical concepts with an emphasis on algebraic, trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Recommended for students with an ACT math score of 24 or above.  Fulfills the mathematical Essential Skills requirement.


MATH 192 Essentials of Calculus 4 hours

An intuitive approach to differential and integral calculus. This course will fulfill the mathematics requirements for Business and Accountancy majors but the Business Division strongly encourages many of its majors to take MATH198 instead. Recommended for students with an ACT math score of 25 or above. Fulfills both the Essential Skills and the Mathematical Mode of Inquiry.


MATH 194 Liberal Arts and Science Calculus (LAS Calculus) 3 hours

[3 hours] - An introduction to the fundamental ideas of calculus with an emphasis on concepts, applications and the historical role of calculus. Designed for students in disciplines that do not require a rigorous mathematical treatment of calculus. Recommended for students with an ACT math score of 25 or above. Fulfills both the Essential Skills and the Mathematical Mode of Inquiry.


MATH 198 Analytic Geometry and Calculus I 5 hours

[5 hours] - Mathematically oriented course focusing on functions, limits, derivatives and integrals. Recommended for students majoring in Business, Accountancy or the Sciences with an ACT math score of 25 or above. Fulfills both the Essential Skills and the Mathematical Mode of Inquiry.


MATH 263 or Beyond

These courses are reserved for individuals who have either received college credit for Calculus I, taken a dual credit calculus course in high school, or received a 3 or better on the Advanced Placement (AP) calculus exam. Fulfills both the Essential Skills and the Mathematical Mode of Inquiry.


Advanced Placement in Calculus

There are four avenues to advanced placement in calculus:

  1. Students who have earned credit in calculus from an accredited college or university will be placed in the appropriate next course.
  2. Students who have taken an Advanced Placement Course in high school and scored 3 on the AB exam will receive credit for MATH 192.  Students who scored 4, or 5 on the AB exam will receive credit for MATH 198.  Students who scored 3, 4, or 5 on the BC exam will receive credit for MATH 198 and MATH 263. 
  3. Students may receive credit for MATH 198 through a CLEP exam.  Click here for more information about accepted CLEP and AP tests.
  4. Students may be placed in MATH 263 or MATH 264 without receiving credit for MATH 198 or MATH 263 by making a satisfactory score on a calculus placement exam.  Students wishing to choose this option should contact the Division of Mathematics and Computer Science to request the calculus placement exam.
